Pineapple and Bromelain

Hand holding half a pineapple with the bromelain filled center in tact

Need some tropical feels on this freezing cold day?? Pineapple is indigenous to South America, but cultivated mainly in the Philippines now thanks to colonialism, commercialization and refrigeration. It is chalk full of the enzyme bromelain (especially in the center!) which helps break down proteins (maybe pineapple & ham pizza is on to something?)

In Europe, bromelain is used to reduce swelling and inflammation after surgery and for sinus infections.

There are also studies suggesting bromelain may help reduce pain for arthritis and has anti-tumor properties in cancer.

Use caution with bromelain, however, if you have allergies to Latex, fennel, celery, papain, wheat and carrots. It may also have side effects with antibiotics, sedatives and blood thinners, so talk to a medical professional before using it as a supplement.
