Tips for managing acute stress

Updated: May 17, 2022

In some ways stress is a natural part of life—some (“eustress”) is even good!— but with the state of the modern world, rapid information exchange, legacies of systemic oppression, and pressures to perform, we tend to be on overdrive.

Unchecked acute stress can lead to chronic stress which can lead to all sorts of health issues. The most basic one is that our guts cannot not absorb the nutrients it needs from the food it’s trying to digest to keep us going. When our stomachs are in flight-fight-or freeze, nutrients are the least of its worries.

Not only is May "Mental Health Awareness Month," I, like so many others, got a first hand reminder this week of why it's so important to have tools to address that rapid surge of adrenaline and tightening of the gut. I wanted to share some tips for everyone on how to calm the nervous and endocrine systems and sure them up for the long run. Because let’s face it, if it’s not one thing it’s another these days. If we’re not taking care of ourselves physically and emotionally, it’s going to be a lot harder to do the things and make the changes. So take a deep breath, soften your belly, and take some notes.
