Photos are not doing the sizes of these turnips justice, but I wanted to share some of their awesome benefits 💫
Eat the leaves AND the roots to get the full power from these plants.
They assist with:
-Blood health
-Bone health
-Liver health
-Cholesterol management
-Blood sugar management
-Detoxification
-Anti-inflammation
-Anti-cancer
-Antibacterial activity
They’re also members of the cruciferous family which have important hormone balance support and aid in fertility boosting diets.
One of my favorite ways to eat them is to bake them and turn them into a root mash.
A Recipe for Mashed Turnips and Thyme
(Adapted from The Spruce Eats)
1 pound turnips, peeled and diced large
2 to 3 tablespoons grass-fed organic butter, or butter-alternative
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp dried thyme
Unrefined salt to taste
Peel and chop turnips into 1 or 2 inch cubes.
Bring a large pot of filtered water to a boil and season with salt.
Once the water is boiling, add the peeled and diced turnips. Cook until fork tender, about 20 to 30 minutes.
Drain the turnips, put them back in the pot and add the butter, thyme, pepper, and salt.
Using a potato masher, mash the ingredients together until you reach your desired texture. If you perfer your mashed turnips very smooth, you could use a food processor instead.
Adjust the seasoning as needed.
Serve hot and enjoy!
